A CANADIAN EXPAT'S EXPERIENCES AND OBSERVATIONS LIVING IN THE WINDY CITY!

Orchid March 23 2014

I used to try my hand at growing all kinds of house plants.  What a delight to grow plants that actually graced the world with their presence long enough to stare out the window for several Canadian seasons.

For me, the green thumb boat sailed into weed-weary waters some time ago.

About 2 1/2 years ago, I was given a beautiful purple orchid from a dear friend here in Chicago.  I love flora, and admire those who seem to have an inner knowing of how to grow and care for these natural beauties.  I, however, am not one of those people.

I prayed, oh how I prayed I would keep this beautiful orchid in the spirit to which it was accustomed.  There have been 3 or 4 times when a spike poked out of the soil, showing signs of hidden purple treasures.  Perhaps my purple thumb has not been so bad after all.

  2. To play even the smallest part in such a creation is something to look back on and allow oneself a moment of pride.

  3. Congratulations. Plants only have to look at me and they keel over and pop their clogs. Full of admiration for people who keep plants alive!

  8. What a lovely story on this lovey day here in South Florida. (It’s hot today). I never had a green thumb. Guess I never will. I think it may be that I leave the growing of beautiful flowers to others. I don’t have the patience. But I do have the patience for other things in life. “To each, his own.” I think that was the title of a song a long time ago. Glad your Sunday turned out nice, Cher. 🙂

Well I honestly don’t think I have a green thumb, either! Yes, we all have our gifts and I think that it would be ultra-boring if we were all the same! Thank you as always for your kind words!! Was that a song? I will have to look it up!! 🙂 Big hugs to you, Cher xo

  10. I’ve never had a lot of luck with growing orchids either, however I’m advised that you should water them with a little rainwater (not fluoridated water from the tap) and that the water needs to be very slightly tepid. I was given a beautiful orchid about six months ago, and it’s doing all right so far, so the water trick seems to be working. Good luck with yours – it looks beautiful!

Oh Veronica, I have never heard that before! Thank you for this excellent information! I’ll certainly try it. And good luck with yours, too; sounds like you are doing the right thing with the rain water! Thank you; ours seems to be quite happy looking out at Lake Michigan! Cher xo

Lovely house plant, your orchid, Cher. Pretty colour and looks so well nurtured and healthy. There are many varieties grown here in the tropics and they are quite hardy. Have a lovely week. Love, Iris. 🙂

Thank you, Iris! I honestly think this dear orchid just knows I don’t know what to do so it has taken pity on me! *grin* Oh, I bet in the tropics there are the most incredible looking orchids anywhere on the planet! And you have a lovely week as well, Iris! Thank you as always for your wonderful words! Love, Cher xo
