The Chicago Files

A CANADIAN EXPAT'S EXPERIENCES AND OBSERVATIONS LIVING IN THE WINDY CITY!

New Mexico October 2015 2

Despite the fact we actually had our vacation in California, you’d hardly know it with the New Mexico photos I’ve taken! Our train trip the, “Southwest Chief” as it is called, meanders its way across the country through a number of states.  However, New Mexico is so vast that a good portion of our traveling was through this phenomenal, majestic state.  Arizona was another state that we traveled through; however, it was all done at night, so we literally never saw it coming or going to and from Los Angeles and Chicago.

Isn’t this an incredible sight!  Once again, New Mexico had me feeling as if I was in an old-fashioned cowboy movie.  At times I actually expected to see horsemen riding alongside the train, guns a-blazin’!  My imagination took over, to be sure.

Do you see the orange hues of the hills?  The soil is orange as well.  Miles and miles of open land, with not a soul in sight.  I stand corrected.  I saw an antelope, but he was too quick for me to take his photo!

  1. A memorable vacation for you. As I was looking at the photograph my mind went to all the different hues in the picture. Weird but I counted 17 hues and stopped LOL

It really is a memorable vacation! So many new and fascinating landscapes! Oh did you? That is really interesting! Now I’ll have to try and do the same but I daresay I don’t think I could get as many as you (and as you said, you stopped at 17!) *biggest grin* Cher xo

      1. Yes I did. lol I went from the landscape in the front then went to the next division in color, then the mountains so to speak then the sky. Some of them are very subtle in color nuances.

Once again dear Don we have the same thoughts about something!! Thank you!! It’s almost surreal, if that makes sense? The eyes are seeing one thing, while the brain is attempting to compute that the scene is actually real!! Do you recall a song that goes, “Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam, where the dear and the antelope play?” I think the one antelope I did see was for ‘effect’ of the movie-like quality!! My guess is the Southwest Chief is a successor to the Santa Fe’s Super Chief, which ran from Chicago to LA back in the glory days of rail travel. Unfortunately, rail travel was losing ground to the airlines by the time I was old enough to appreciate it.

You are absolutely correct, John! This route used to be the Santa Fe’s Super Chief! Yes, as children I don’t think we appreciate things like train travel until we are older. Very true indeed! Cher xo

  11. Those wide, wide open spaces are quite a change from Chi town wouldn’t you say?
What’s not to like about those clear star filled nights and flesh air. wow.
So when is your next trip?? Great photo and story

They most definitely are Eddie!! While gazing up at the sky while the train headed westward, I saw millions of stars; something I had not seen for a long, long time (and I love it)! To me, nature is reality, and large cities (although I love Chicago) are illusions if that makes sense? Ah, thank you, dear Eddie! I’m not sure where our next trip will be, as it took quite a while to save up for the California trip! But I’d love to explore more of the Southwest!! Cher xo
